ill.i Optics and AREA debuted an innovative, statement eyewear style, “The Davey”, on the runway at NYFW SS18, seamlessly combining their design point of views. The sunglasses were conceived from a mutual admiration of late 1980s optical shapes. As a founding inspiration for ill.i the brand, this aesthetic fuses with AREA’s 2002/2003 musings, an era the brand often references in their collections.
For SS18, AREA also looked to numerous works from Alexander Calder, specifically his metal work, echoed in the sculptural brow bars on the ill.i+AREA Davey. The continuous minimal lines frame reflective, jewel-tone lenses that are true to ill.i’s ambition of creating wearable art for the face. The use of applied crystals across the front of select variations instantly makes the Davey a standout accessory.
ill.i+AREA showcases an entirely new way to adopt the accessory, combining eyewear and jewellery with additional crystals delicately hanging from the end point of the arm. Dripping subtly behind the ear, this design detail transforms the traditional wear into a past, present, future definition of adornment.
